Active fire protection (AFP) is an integral part of fire protection strategy. AFP is characterised by items and/or systems, which require a certain amount of motion and response in order to work, contrary to passive fire protection.
Put simply, active fire protection requires action to be taken to stop or contain a fire. This may involve a person taking a manual action, such as using a portable fire extinguisher. On the other hand, this may be a smoke detector that triggers an alarm or automatic sprinkler.
